Visiting Vancouver

With the holidays, Vancouver’s Stanley Park sparkles with millions of twinkling lights and animated holiday displays, along with the music and sounds of the holidays. Visit through the end of December for a ride on the Bright Nights Train, Stanley Park’s miniature train decked out for the holidays. The Festival of Lights at Van Dusen Botanical Garden is another Vancouver Holiday highlight, featuring the Dancing Lights show. All too soon, the holiday lights go out and the holidays give way to the New Year and Vancouver winter fun. Hockey at Rodgers Arena, 2013 Dine Out Vancouver – there are events for all in Vancouver.

Chances are if you were in Vancouver over the holidays, you are thanking Burnaby’s Metropolis at Metrotown for making shopping convenient. From the Apple Store to Zara, and over 390 stores in between, Metropolis at Metrotown has about everything. Burnaby, located in the centre of British Columbia’s lower mainland, is convenient for shoppers coming from any direction.

Hockey fans remain hopeful the NHL 2012 – 2013 season will resume filling Rodgers Arena with the excitement of Vancouver Canuck hockey. Meanwhile, hockey fans cheer on the Vancouver Giants, and community teams from the Chilliwack Chiefs and Coquitlam Express to the Langley Rivermen and Surrey Eagles. Winter and hockey go hand-in-hand in British Columbia.

Vancouver in the New Year is a great place for foodies. Dine Out Vancouver 2013 begins January 18th and runs through the 3rd of February. Abbotsford, called Sports Town Canada, is located an hour east of Vancouver. While the Abbotsford Heat and Abbotsford Pilots keep hockey fans entertained, venues like Tradex, Abbotsford’s Trade & Exhibition Center, host a diversity of events and activities. Tradex hosts the 2013 Vancouver Motorcycle Show January 11th through the 20th, and Pacific Agriculture January 24th through 26th.

Spring fever ramps up in Abbotsford come March 1st, with the BC Boat & Sportsmen and BC Hunting show. Branded as Canada’s biggest and best sportsmen’s show, Abbotsford Tradex is the place to find the latest gear and equipment for outdoor fun.

Surrey, 30 minutes south of Burnaby, hosts one of the largest Vaisakhi Parade and Celebrations in North America. Welcome spring with a visit to Surrey mid-April, to celebrate the Sikh Holy Day, marking the birth of the Khalsa fraternity. The Surrey Vaisakhi Parade fills the streets of Surrey with floats, performers and music. In the tradition of Vaisakhi, local residents and businesses offer visitors free food and drinks.
